{"id":19372,"date":"2024-07-29T11:07:07","date_gmt":"2024-07-29T11:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eprc.ge\/?post_type=news_p_type&#038;p=19372"},"modified":"2024-07-29T11:07:07","modified_gmt":"2024-07-29T11:07:07","slug":"1922-catholicos-patriarch-ambrosi-khelaia-addresses-the-genoa-international-conference-and-urges-the-international-community-to-support-the-struggle-of-georgians-against-the-russian-occupation","status":"publish","type":"news_p_type","link":"https:\/\/eprc.ge\/en\/news\/1922-catholicos-patriarch-ambrosi-khelaia-addresses-the-genoa-international-conference-and-urges-the-international-community-to-support-the-struggle-of-georgians-against-the-russian-occupation\/","title":{"rendered":"1922 &#8211; Catholicos-Patriarch Ambrosi Khelaia addresses the Genoa International Conference and urges the international community to support the struggle of Georgians against the Russian occupation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Religion and the State in Georgia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Principles of secularism in the constitution of independent Georgia and the Georgian church<\/p>\n<p>against Soviet occupation<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 16 of the first constitution of Georgia, adopted in 1921, was titled \u201cThe State and the Church.\u201d It consisted of three articles:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArticle 142 &#8211; The state and the church shall be separate and independent.<\/p>\n<p>Article 143 &#8211; No religion shall enjoy privileges.<\/p>\n<p>Article 144 &#8211; Payment of expenses relating to religious matters from the state treasury and local self-government funds shall be prohibited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strictly formulated secular principles did not prevent the Orthodox Church of Georgia from taking \u00a0a strongly \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0negative stance towards the occupation of Georgia by Soviet Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Catholicos-Patriarch Ambrosi Khelaia petitioned the 1922 Genoa International Conference:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 1918, the Georgian people proclaimed their independence and immediately began \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to rebuild \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0political, national, and spiritual life of the country&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Obviously, Russia, the former master of Georgia and oppressor of smaller nations, could not tolerate this. It sent troops to the Georgian borders, and on February 25, 1921, the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0humiliating yoke of slavery was again imposed on the small and wounded \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Georgia, the worst it had ever experienced in its centuries-long \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0history.<\/p>\n<p>It is true that the aggressors are trying to demonstrate to everyone , both at home and abroad, that they have liberated and benefited the Georgian nation. However, as the spiritual father of the Georgian nation, I know how \u201chappy\u201d they are\u2026 Without any exaggeration, let me say that the experiments to which the Georgian nation has been subjected will inevitably lead to its physical and moral degradation!<\/p>\n<p>The Georgian nation is wounded, but it cannot even raise its voice. Under these circumstances, I, as the chief shepherd of the Georgian nation, consider it my duty \u00a0to declare to civilized mankind: I, as a representative of the Church, do not enter into\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0debates regarding comparative merits of various forms of political life; however, I cannot dissociate myself from such aspirations of our nation as to create relatively favorable \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0conditions for its material and spiritual development.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, I am asking:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>That the occupying armed forces of Russia leave the territory of Georgia without delay and that Georgian territory be protected from violence and seizure by foreigners.<\/li>\n<li>That the Georgian nation be given the opportunity to freely organize its life and pursue it as it decides to be appropriate.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Because of this petition, the Bolshevik regime arrested the Patriarch and executed him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":19371,"template":"","websites":[19],"news_categories":[270,272],"class_list":["post-19372","news_p_type","type-news_p_type","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","websites-eprc","news_categories-blog","news_categories-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>1922 - Catholicos-Patriarch Ambrosi Khelaia addresses the Genoa International Conference and urges the international community to support the struggle of Georgians against the Russian occupation &bull;
