Niko Nikoladze and his ideas in the service of Georgia\u2019s transformation, modernization, and bringing it closer to Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n

The system of mining and export of strategic raw materials in Western Georgia; the mining of Chiatura manganese and Tkibuli coal; the first railway line in the South Caucasus from Tbilisi to Poti and then from Tbilisi to Telavi; the export of raw materials to Europe from the seaport of Poti, delivered to it by railway; the first major European investors in the history of independent Georgia \u2013 all these and many other important undertakings in Georgia are associated with the name of Niko Nikoladze.<\/p>\n

After receiving a doctorate from the University of Zurich for his thesis On the Social and Economic Consequences of Disarmament, Niko Nikoladze returned to his homeland and made an invaluable contribution to the European socio-economic modernization of the country and the establishment of economic ties between Georgia and Europe.<\/p>\n

In 1894, Niko Nikoladze was elected mayor of Poti, a position he held for 20 years. During his tenure in Poti, he drained the swamps; rebuilt the architectural layout of the city on the Parisian model; built a seaport, a cathedral, a hydroelectric power plant, and a city recreation park; founded a museum; opened the first cinema; electrified the city; laid telephone lines, water pipes, etc.<\/p>\n

He wrote that in the conditions of globalization and technological progress, Georgia had to compete economically with the whole world, and if the Georgian people met this reality with primitive plow agriculture, they would have to \u201cfight with arrows against Krupp cannons.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, he tried to modernize agriculture as well , organizing an experimental farm in his native village of Didi Jikhaishi. he. He imported from Europe breeds of egg-laying hens, high-yielding cows, and high-yielding plant varieties. He was the first Georgian to bring from Europe a refrigerator, a dishwasher, butter-churning equipment, a bicycle, and much more.<\/p>\n

On May 26, 1918, as a member of parliament, Nikoladze signed the declaration of independence of Georgia and accompanied Foreign Affairs Minister Akaki Chkhenkeli to Germany as a key negotiator on economic issues. He secured an agreement to attract famous German corporations such as Krupp, the Gelsenkirchen mining company, and others to the economic hub he established. Nikoladze discussed with the German State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Richard von Kulhmann, the possibility of creating a Beijing-Poti-Berlin transit route: Asian goods from Beijing would be transported by rail to Poti and from there distributed to Europe via the Poti seaport. This was the first ever outline of an idea that has been practically realized today and is known as the Middle Corridor. The Soviet occupation of Georgia thwarted these plans.<\/p>\n
