The 2008 August war was one of the first manifestations of Russia’s aggressive policy in the 21st century and the na\u00efve hope that Russia would appease itself by occupying the territories of Georgia turned out to be false.<\/p>\n
For us, Russia’s brutal crimes on the occupied territories of Ukraine, the expulsion of peaceful residents from their homes, and the destruction of towns and villages, echo the crimes committed against Georgian citizens 14 years ago. Fortunately, in contrast to the August war, the large-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia has elicited a strong response from the international community.<\/p>\n
As an occupied country, Georgia has a moral duty to support and show solidarity with the victims of Putin’s regime. The unanimity of the international community, prompted by the invasion of Ukraine, gives Georgia an opportunity to turn this painful experience in the country’s favor. Alas, at this stage, Georgia has not been able to properly engage in the accelerated process of European integration.<\/p>\n
Nothing suggests that Russia intends to cease its military expansion. Georgia must avoid often ambiguous and vague policies that risk losing the support and solidarity of the free world, essential for its survival in the face of aggression.<\/p>\n
Georgia is at the forefront of the struggle for freedom and 14 years later, the “borderization” and the occupation are still part of our everyday life.<\/p>\n
We must do our utmost to ensure that Georgia takes its place irreversibly in the free and democratic world.<\/p>\n
